A UAV with a high definition and zoom camera can be piloted from the ground, no need for rope access workers to scale the turbine. Very detailed images of the complete blades are taken to view any defects. The speed of deployment of a UAV is where its biggest cost savings are. Inspections can be completed in a fraction of the time a human would take, and the turbine can be returned to service much quicker. UAV cameras still need to have turbines shut down to inspect blades and joints. Once the turbine is active thermal imaging can be taken to show anomalies and the hot spots in wiring that could lead to malfunction.
